Another tense Brexit week begins: What will happen next?

London, United Kingdom – At the start of another week, which was meant to be the first after the United Kingdom’ s exit from the European Union, the Brexit outlook is as uncertain as ever.   What is happening today? A second round of non-binding “indicative votes” on Monday aims to test support for alternatives to Prime Minister Theresa May ‘s divorce deal with the EU. The votes will take place at 8 GMT, and results will come in at around 10pm. All eyes are on whether the vote will lead to MPs forcing May’s hand towards a “softer Brexit”, possibly leading to a general election. Parliament rejected all eight alternative options put to a vote last week.   Holding a second referendum and a customs union with the EU received the most support. On the day the country was originally scheduled to leave the EU, March 29, MPs voted down May’s deal with the bloc for the third time. Unlike the previous two votes, this ballot was held on only one of two constituent parts of the deal, th

“Way Too Quick:” Duke Freshmen Distraught to See Their Time Together End

Image
Zion Williamson (left), Cam Reddish and Tre Jones lost their shot at a Final Four berth Sunday, bringing to an end their one season as college teammates. Patrick Smith/Getty Images WASHINGTON — They wanted to be together. A few years ago, these four sensational freshmen had been strangers scattered across North America. Then, in fits and starts, they formed friendships. They shared meals at AAU tournaments in South Carolina or roomed together at USA Basketball camps in Colorado Springs. And then, beginning in the fall of 2017, Tre Jones, Cam Reddish, RJ Barrett and Zion Williamson committed—not only to Duke but also to each other. Any of them would have been the prized recruit for almost any college basketball team. Jones was the Russian nesting doll of his brother Tyus, who had guided Duke to a national championship in 2015. Reddish was the do-everything wing who some thought would wind up the most talented NBA player of the four. Barrett was the consensus No. 1 player in the c

Final Four 2019: Full Breakdown, Predictions and Stars to Watch

Image
0 of 12 Michigan State’s Cassius Winston (5) and Xavier Tillman (23) Rob Carr/Getty Images The once chalk-heavy 2019 NCAA men’s basketball tournament took a 90-degree turn on Friday night, with several Sweet 16 and Elite Eight upsets giving us a Final Four of No. 5 Auburn, No. 3 Texas Tech, No. 2 Michigan State and No. 1 Virginia. It’s not as hopelessly unpredictable as Loyola-Chicago getting this far as a No. 11 seed last year, but there can’t be more than a handful of people left in the world who picked this in their brackets. That’s the beauty of this chaotic tournament, though. By the time the field was whittled down to the Sweet 16, it was impossible to dream up a Final Four scenario that would be lacking in intrigue. And as it turns out, we have three programs that have never played in a national championship game before and a fourth (Michigan State) from a major conference that hasn’t won it all since 2000. As those teams prepare to make history in Minneapolis next

Palestine, Golan Heights take centre stage at Arab League summit

Image
Tunis, Tunisia – The Arab League has rejected the US’s recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights and renewed a call for the establishment of a Palestinian state, saying peace and security in the region depended on a solution to the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict.   In a final statement after Sunday’s summit in Tunisia’s capital, Arab leaders stressed their “full support for Syria’s right” over the Golan plateau, which Israel seized from Syria in the 1967 war, and expressed their determination to “continue efforts to resume” peace negotiations between Israel and Palestine . The daylong meeting in Tunis took place against the backdrop of ongoing regional unrest and conflict – from the long-running wars in Syria and Yemen to instability in Libya, and the widespread anti-government protests in Algeria and Sudan to a major diplomatic dispute in the Gulf. Khamis al-Jihnaoui, Tunisia’s foreign minister, who delivered the 30th summit’s final statemen

Who will be Ukraine’s next president?

It’s been a challenging five years since Ukraine ‘s revolution. Petro Poroshenko took over as leader, promising to fight corruption and stand strong after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. But with a struggling economy and a war against separatists in the east of the country, Poroshenko is facing a battle to hold on to the job. He is one of 39 candidates in the first round of Sunday’s presidential election, along with former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. But the frontrunner appears to be Volodymyr Zelensky, a comedian with no experience in politics, except for playing the president in a hit TV show. So who will Ukrainians choose? Palestinians mourn boys killed by Israeli forces in Gaza rallies

Image
Thousands of people in the besieged Gaza Strip  have attended the funerals of the four young Palestinians killed by Israeli forces during mass protests along the perimeter fence with Israel. Tens of thousands of Palestinians on Saturday gathered at the fence to mark the first anniversary of the Great March of Return rallies, facing off against Israeli tanks and soldiers who used  live rounds, rubber bullets and tear gas on the protesters . Tamer Abu el-Khair, 17,  was shot in the chest east of Khan Younis in southern Gaza and later died at a hospital,  according to the health ministry in the coastal enclave, which has been under a crippling Israeli-Egypt blockade for the past 12 years. Two other 17-year-olds –  Adham Amara and Belal al-Najjar – were also killed. A fourth Palestinian, 20-year-old Mohamed Jihad Saad, was killed in an overnight protest ahead of the main demonstration.  Since March 30 last year, Palestinians in the Hamas-run Strip have been demanding the right to ret

Erdogan’s ruling AK Party takes lead in key local polls

Istanbul, Turkey  – Partial results show that Turkey ‘s ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party is in the lead in Sunday’s local elections that are seen as a test for  President  Recep Tayyip Erdogan . With 44.2 percent of the votes counted as of 8pm (17:00 GMT), an AK Party-led alliance had secured 52.3 percent of the votes countrywide, according to state-run Anadolu Agency.  It was followed by a coalition led by the main opposition centre-left Republican People’s Party, with 37.8 of the votes. The polls were seen as a major challenge for  Erdogan and his party  given a backdrop of high inflation and rising unemployment sparked by a major currency crisis last year. The AK Party entered the race with its ally in the last two polls, the far-right Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), under the People’s Alliance. For its part, CHP joined forces with the  right-wing Good (IYI) Party in the Nation Alliance. Both blocs have fielded dozens of joint candidates in the country’s provinces,

Leaked documents reveal abuse of Saudi prisoners: Report

Saudi political prisoners suffered torture and malnutrition, according to leaked medical reports prepared for King Salman, the Guardian newspaper has revealed . The medical reports are understood to have been prepared for the king along with recommendations that include potential pardoning for the prisoners or early release due to health concerns. The medical examinations included in the report are believed to have been conducted in January for up to 60 prisoners as part of an internal review ordered by the king, despite objections by aides of Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman (MBS), the Guardian wrote. The report was to be circulated around the royal court, a source told the British newspaper. The conditions of the prisoners as reported in the leaked documents are consistent, the Guardian said, with several reports that have emerged in recent months involving claims of torture in Saudi prisons. MBS, the kingdom’s de facto leader, is also facing reproach over the murder of Saudi
